Arnold, MD - The Howard Community College Dragons had been sharpening their focus all week to prepare for their Division II opener, and they did not disappoint in an 87-36 blowout over the Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks.
The moment the ball left the referee's hand, the Dragons seized control. Freshman forward
Savannah Price (Woodbridge, VA/Freedom) set the tone with a three pointer to start the scoring for Howard. Price had a monster game, earning her season high 20 points and knocking down four threes as well.
The momentum belonged to Howard, but it wasn't just offense. The Dragons' defense was suffocating. Anne Arundel struggled to move the ball, with every passing lane cut off. Howard forced a whopping 46 turnovers and then capitalized off of those mistakes. The Dragons scored 51 points off of turnovers, more than the Riverhawks had all game. Jasmine Dailey (Odenton, MD/Meade) totaled six steals on her own, Naomi Williams (Odenton, MD/Meade) had four, and London Galbraith (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) managed to earn three steals as well.
What began as a run became an avalanche. At the half the Dragons had an unfathomable lead with the score reading 40-16. Howard controlled the glass the entire match. They won the rebound battle, grabbing 13 more rebounds than the Riverhawks. And when the Dragons weren't hitting from deep, they were attacking the rim, drawing fouls, and finishing through contact.
Howard didn't let up as the scoring was coming from everywhere. London Galbraith (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) extended her streak of double digit scoring to three games in a row with 15 points. Naomi Williams (Odenton, MD/Meade) scored 12 points off the bench and came down with eight rebounds, and Adriel Oga (Randallstown, MD/Randallstown) earned her season high with nine points. Avery Richardson (Beltsville, MD/High Point) scored her first bucket of the season late, while Kaydence Grier (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) made her long-awaited debut and assisted on a Jasmine Daily shot.
By the time the final buzzer echoed across the gym, Howard Community College had secured a dominant, emphatic blowout win over Anne Arundel, a performance that left no doubt about the Dragons' potential. The Dragons take the court again at home, on Saturday, November 22 at 12:00 PM with a home court showdown against Frederick Community College!
