Howard Struggles Against #1 Harford

Bel Air, MD - In a game rescheduled from two weeks ago due to rain, the Howard Community College Dragons fell to the #1 ranked Harford Community College Fighting Owls 19-9 on Friday.

The Dragons fell behind 7-2 in the first against the number one JUCO team in the country, but fought back to make it a five-point game entering the half. However, the Dragons couldn't stop Harford from scoring nine second-half goals on them to pull away in the end.

The Dragons main goal for Friday's game was to limit Harford's leading attackers Liam Forsyth and Kennedy Opie, but both scored twice in the opening five minutes to give Harford a 4-1 lead. Howard's only goal came from an unassisted shot by Logan Foust (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron), and after a series of penalties, they allowed two more goals from the Owls. Mitchell Dua (Mount Airy, MD/Loyola Blakefield) managed to score late in the quarter, only for the FIghting Owls to immediately respond, making it 7-2 after one.

The second half would see the Dragons begin to cut into Harford's lead, with Cyrus Frid-Denikos (Elkridge, MD/Howard) scoring unassisted to begin the quarter. Howard got within four points off a pair of William Pesce (Derwood, MD/Col. Zadok Magruder) goals, but one last Harford shot before the half slipped past goalie Lewis Collora (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) to make it 10-5.

Howard kept the score within striking distance throughout the third, scoring off a goal from Mason Ambrose (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) and two goals from John Stubbs (Catonsville, MD/Boys Latin). But by the fourth, the Fighting Owls had fully pulled away, with Liam Forsyth scoring eight goals himself. Howard's last point of the game came from Pesce, who scored on a man-up possession to make the final score 19-9.

Pesce finished the evening with three goals on eight shots. Stubbs, who was recently promoted to the Australian U20 national team, scored two goals on nine shots with one assist for three points. Logan Foust (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) scored once on eight shots for two points, while Cyrus Frid-Denikos (Elkridge, MD/Howard) scored on goal on three shots along with two ground balls. Mitchell Dua (Mount Airy, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored two points on one goal, one assist, and two ground balls. Aidan Ro (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) went 11-25 on faceoffs with four ground balls, while Jack Feys (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville), Jakai Butler (Columbia, MD/Vincent Pallotti), Lewis Collora (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake), and Jayton McDuffie (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) each scored two ground balls. Lewis Collora (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) had 17 saves in net.

The Dragons next face the #2 ranked team in the country in CCBC Essex on Wednesday, March 26 at 7:00 PM.
