Columbia, MD - Thursday night belonged to volleyball as the Howard Community College Dragons picked up their third win of the season with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Patrick Henry College!
Facing a tough intra-league opponent from the USCAA, the Dragons dominated the stat sheet. After two close first sets, Howard beat the Sentinals by 20 in the final set to get their second sweep of the season. The victory pushes the Dragons to 2-3 on the year!
Howard built up a massive lead in the first set, but had to hold off a Sentinal comeback to take it 25-16. Set two saw the Sentinals come out swinging, taking a seven-point lead at one point. But the Dragons remained in the game, fighting back to tie the contest and take the second set 25-18. Set three belonged to the Dragons, as they battered the Sentinals by 20 to take a commanding 25-5 victory.
The Dragons dominated the Sentinals in every statistical category.
Zyon Austin (Odenton, MD/Meade) led the team with eleven kills in her breakout game, while also recording nine digs and three assists.
Abigail Leis (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) recorded six kills, while
Arianna Layne (Bridgetown, Barbados/Combermere School) proved valuable on both sides of the ball with five kills and eight digs.
Cheyenne Ellis (Eldersburg, MD/Century) and
Gracie Close (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) each recorded 13 assists as they shared the role of setter for the Dragons, while
Stefamae Barquillia (Samar, The Philippines/Einstein)Â had a night to remember. Barquillia recorded 25 digs and ten service aces, as her three stints at serving saw the Dragons jump out to massive leads in all three sets.
Howard next faces a tough tri-match this Saturday, September 13 in Keyser, WV. They'll face the winless Chesapeake Skipjacks at 2:00 PM, followed by a showdown with host-school WVU Potomac State College at 4:00 PM!
