Purcellville, VA - The surging Howard Community College Dragons made it five straight wins Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep of the Patrick Henry College Sentinels.
The Dragons dominated PHC during the first two sets, then held off a comeback attempt in the third to score another decisive victory in what is turning into the best season for the program this decade. Howard racked up 34 total kills, ten aces, and 57 total digs while holding Patrick Henry to a -.009% attack percentage.
Howard controlled the first set from the beginning, with
Toriana Curry giving the Dragons the highlight play with three-straight blocks. After a 25-16 win, the Dragons pulled away from a pesky Sentinels squad in the second to win 25-15. Set three saw Patrick Henry control the contest early on, but thanks to electric kills from
Zyon Austin and a solid shift at serving from
Vivian Gonzalez, Howard fought back into the contest. The Dragons took advantage of 13 errors by the Sentinels in the set to win 26-24.
Austin led the Dragons with 13 kills and seven digs, while
Amelia Thomas continued her excellent second half of the season with seven kills and a block. Curry had five kills, five blocks, and three digs, while
Diana Feria added four kills and five digs.
Abigail Nirola led the Dragons with 29 assists, while
Yusra Arenas and
Kira King added ten and 24 digs respectively. King also had three aces, one of six Dragons to record an ace during the contest.
Next up for Howard is a showdown with Region 20 powerhouse Frederick Community College on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 PM.
