Columbia, MD - A late goal from
Gabriela Rodriguez wasn't enough for the Howard Community College Dragons to overcome the Allegany College of Maryland Trojans in Tuesday's regular season finale.
The Dragons out-shot the Trojans all day and controlled the flow of the game, yet a late barrage of Allegany goals allowed the Trojans to pull off a 3-1 win. The loss drops the Dragons to 3-10 overall and 3-9 in conference play for the season.
Howard's defense clamped down on Allegany in the first half, but their offense couldn't break through. Tied 0-0 at the half, the Dragons changed goalkeepers to try and give themselves more chances.
Ashly Dominguez nearly had the Dragons first goal early in the half, but goalkeeper Rebekah Costal made a diving save to snuff out the chance.
Allegany finally struck first in the 59th minute, as Allie Knieriem broke loose to score against
Sophia Newman. Neveah Bunbasi made it 2-0 in the 66th minute as the Dragons struggled to keep up with Allegany's attack. Howard continued to barrage the Trojans with shots, but Costal kept them at bay with 24 saves on the afternoon.
Howard finally broke through in the 85th minute as Rodriguez scored off a pass from
Maeve Daly. Trailing by a goal, the Dragons continued to attack relentlessly, but Costal held firm in net. Knieriem scored on a breakaway in the 88th minute to put the game away for the Trojans.
Howard out-shot the Trojans 43-13 on the evening, their highest total of shots for the season. Rodriguez had 19 shots, 12 shots on goal, and the lone Dragons goal of the game. Daly had nine shots, four shots on goal, and an assist.
