Dragons Struggle Against Division I Mustangs

Columbia, MD - The anticipation was high as Division I Monroe University entered the building Sunday afternoon to face off against Howard Community College.

Monroe came out in a full court pressure, forcing early turnovers and jumping to a 8-0 lead behind aggressive perimeter defense and transition scoring. The Mustangs maintained control for much of the first quarter.

Monroe kept command throughout the second quarter, capitalizing on Howard's turnovers with quick ball movement and timely perimeter shooting. The Mustangs carried a 17–4 second quarter. At the half the score read 36-13.

The third quarter was more of the same, with no players in double figures for the Dragons. Jolie Hamilton (Baltimore, MD/Forest Park) led the team in points and rebounds, knocking down four free throws and finishing with six points and eight rebounds. Naomi Williams (Odenton, MD/Meade) contributed with six points and two steals as well.

The Mustangs continued to shoot well from three point range down the stretch, winning the contest 78-29. This will most likely be the final meeting between these two programs, as the Mustangs are transitioning to the NCAA next season to play DII ball.

Howard faced some tough competition but will be back in action on February 20 at home against Montgomery College at 5:00 PM.
