Catonsville, MD - Howard Community College's men's basketball team ended their regular season on a sour note with a 62-59 loss to rivals CCBC Catonsville.
Howard's loss marks the eleventh loss of the season for the Dragons, the most single the 2018-19 season. Despite the outcome, Howard still has an outside chance to claim the #1 seed in the Region 20 playoffs.
The Dragons fell into an early 29-16 hole at the hands of the Cardinals, who were eager to get their first win over Howard this decade. Poor shooting was the Dragons demise as the team combined to shoot just 6-26 in the first half. Catonsville erupted out to a 15-point lead nearing the half, capitalizing on Dragon turnovers.
The second half saw the Dragons begin to charge back, led by clutch shots from
Jake Tillman (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside) and
Sincere Barfield (Philadelphia, PA/Patterson). With minutes left, the Dragons were down just five points, but they couldn't close back in on the Cardinals. Several key missed shots in the final minutes secured the upset loss for the Dragons.
Sincere Barfield (Philadelphia, PA/Patterson) finished the evening as Howard's leading scorer with 15 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Tillman added 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while
Myles McDuffie (Baltimore, MD/Lake Clifton) finished the evening with ten points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
Cedric Harville (Baltimore, MD/Ben Franklin) had nine points and seven rebounds, while
Nathan Hiteshew (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) had his best game of the year with five points off the bench.
TaJir Webster (Waldorf, MD/St. Charles) snagged six rebounds and a block to finish the evening.
The Dragons will either be the #1 or #2 seed in the Region 20 playoffs, with a home playoff game against either Montgomery College or Chesapeake College scheduled for Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 PM.
