Dragons Dominate in Blowout Win at Westmoreland

Youngwood, PA-  Howard Community College's men's basketball put together a complete performance to secure a 93-70 win over Westmoreland County Community College, finishing their Pennsylvania road trip with a perfect 2-0 record.

On a two game win streak after their win over Beaver County, the Dragons were determined to continue their great late-season play.

The first half was highly competitive, with Westmoreland taking an early lead until Jake Tillman (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside) opened the scoring for Howard. Juan Bell (Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) totaled his highest scoring game of the season, leading the team with seventeen points. Eleven of them came in the first half as he hit two three pointers. At the seven minute mark the Wolfpack had built an eleven point lead, and it looked like they were in control.

A spark came from the Dragons on both sides of the court. Howard's defense made several key stops and the offense responded with baskets on the other end. Howard's comeback started with back-to-back layups from Sincere Barfield (Philadelphia, PA/Patterson), who finished with fifteen points as the second leading scorer. Barfield also tied with Nehemiah Smith (Bronx, NY/Laurel) for the most rebounds, as both players grabbed seven boards. By halftime, Howard had stormed all the way back from what was an eleven point deficit to a one point lead. The score read 35-34 in favor of the Dragons.

The second half was nothing short of complete dominance from Howard. They came out with energy, using strong defensive pressure and efficient offense to gain an early advantage. Myles McDuffie (Baltimore, MD/Lake Clifton) started the scoring in the second half and had ten points as well, tying as the leading scorer with seventeen points.

Crisp ball movement created open looks, and Howard capitalized while limiting Westmoreland's opportunities on the other end. The defensive effort forced tough shots and helped Howard build momentum as the second half progressed. Lorcan Hyndman (Sydney, Australia/Bishop O'Connell) contributed, knocking down three perimeter jumpers and grabbed five rebounds. This was a complete team effort as Zion Dixon (District Heights, MD/Largo) scored seven points, while hitting a three, in only four minutes of play. In the final minutes, freshman Miles Reinders (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) saw his first action of the season and scored an assist.

Down the stretch, Howard showed composure and discipline, executing in the half court and protecting the lead with smart possessions. The victory over Westmoreland on a back-to-back road trip extended their win streak to three in a row. The Dragons will battle again Wednesday, February 11 versus Allegany College of Maryland at 7:00PM.
