Columbia, MD - The wind cut across the turf at Howard Community College's lacrosse stadium as the players took the field, but the energy around the Howard Community College Dragons felt warm and electric. Ahead of them stood Anne Arundel Community College, a conference opponent come to do battle in a non-conference game.
Howard struck first. Less than a minute into the game, the Dragons scored their first goal thanks to Quinn Brennan (Kingsville, ON/Kingsville District), who finished Wednesday afternoon with a season-high four goals. Howard kept the momentum going from then on, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Anne Arundel had a chance to respond.
Anne Arundel tried to answer with a few goals of their own, and after looking at a 4-1 deficit the Riverhawks scored three straight to tie the game up at 4-4. The Dragons did an excellent job of staying composed. Bobby Pupich (Huntley, IL/Huntley) scored the next goal to regain the lead. Pupich was one of five dragons to score four or more goals this game. The offensive prowess was on full display, as Logan Foust (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron), the leader in goals this game, totaled his season high six and scored immediately after Pupich.
By the end of the first half, the score read 12-5, and Howard had already built a commanding lead. Their offense moved like a storm, fast breaks, crisp passes, and shots that seemed to find every open corner of the goal. Meanwhile, the Dragons' defense swarmed the ball, forcing turnovers and giving their offense even more opportunities.
The scoreboard kept climbing. Fans were looking up at the numbers in disbelief, as the Dragons were dominating in every phase of the game. Whether faceoffs, ground balls, or shooting accuracy, the Dragons could not be stopped. At a point in the game Howard went on a 10-0 goal run, unbelievably jumping the score from 6-5 to 16-5.
In the fourth quarter, with the game well in hand, the Dragons continued to add insult to injury. With seven minutes left Bobby Pupich (Huntley, IL/Huntley) scored goal number four. The final score came from Lukas Rozon (Ottawa, ON/Citadelle), who earned his fourth goal as well. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 27-9 in favor of Howard. It was a statement win for the Dragons like none before.
Players gathered near their goalie, celebrating their second victory of the season. Coaches shook hands with quiet smiles, knowing the performance showed just how dangerous the Dragons could be when everything came together.
The Dragons play again on Sunday, March 15, in an away game versus #2 Onondaga Community College, starting at 1:00 PM.
