Howard's Historic Year Ends in First Round

Ellicott City, MD - Howard Community College's historic softball season came to an end on Saturday night, as the Dragons lost the tiebreaking game three against the rival CCBC Catonsville Cardinals.

Despite taking an early lead, the Dragons were unable to overcome a pair of dominant innings midway through the contest from the Cardinals, who won game three via mercy rule. The loss marks the third straight year that Howard has been eliminated from the postseason by their rivals.

After an Aliceanna Weibley home run opened the scoring in the second for the Cardinals, the Dragons took their first lead off a Taylor Pence center field single that scored two runs. It would be the only lead of the night for Howard.

Catonsville scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Howard began to cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning, with Pence hitting her second RBI single of the night. It would be the final run of the season, as the Cardinals scored six unanswered runs to take an 11-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth. The Dragons were unable to come back in the bottom of the inning, ending their season.

Despite the first round exit, the Dragons set numerous records this year for hits, runs, RBIs, and home runs. They finished with a winning record for the first time in program history and hosted their first playoff games. This offseason will see the Dragons say goodbye to sophomores Madison Falby, Victoria Wright, Marissa Webb, Sophia Steele, and Taylor Pence. Now, the Dragons look to the future and next season as they build off of the success of this historic year.
