Columbia, MD - Howard Community College's men's soccer team moved to 5-0-1 on the season Friday afternoon, defeating the Harford Community College Fighting Owls 2-0.
In a rematch of the Dragons' only tie from last season, Howard's #10-ranked squad took care of business in a gritty, defensive battle. The Dragons out-shot the Fighting Owls 17-12 and shut down Harford's offense with a phenomenal performance in net from freshman Alejandro Dealvarez.
Howard would strike first, scoring off a moonshot from sophomore
Yeabsira Tesfaye in the 28th minute. Up 1-0, the Dragons defense dug in against a flurry of attacks from Harford's offense. The Fighting Owls were denied by Dealvarez, who made eight saves and recorded his third shutout win of the season.
In the second half, the Dragons iced the contest when
Angel Giron-Ramos scored off a pass from Tesfaye to make it 2-0. Dealvarez made one more tremendous save with minutes left, knocking the ball loose in midair to seal the win for the Dragons.
Tesfaye led the Dragons with six shots, four shots on goal, a goal, and an assist. Giron-Ramos had three shots with two shots on goal and a goal.
Carson Feeser,
Lucas Britos, and
Nicholas Mirecki each had two shots.
The Dragons have their toughest test of the season next week, as they face #8 CCBC Essex in a rematch of last year's Region 20 title game on Wedensday, September 17 at 7:00 PM.
