Rob Ryerson

Rob Ryerson was announced as the head coach of the Howard Community College men's soccer team in February 2024.

A Howard County graduate of Oakland Mills High School, Rob Ryerson was the head coach for 13 seasons at Mount St. Mary's, where he was able to guide the NCAA Division I program successfully during his tenure. In the last four seasons, Ryerson guided the Mount to a 22-20-4 record in the Northeast Conference. The Mount advanced to the NEC Championship Game for the third time in program history and participated in its fifth NEC postseason appearance to earn Ryerson NEC Coach of the Year honors in 2008. 

While leading the Mount, Ryerson had coached two NEC Rookie of the Years, eight All-NEC first-team selections, 11 All-NEC second-team selections, three NEC Players of the Week and 12 NEC Rookies of the Week in his 13 seasons. In addition, he mentored players that went on to play in the United Soccer League Second Division and the Major League Soccer.

Ryerson began his coaching career as an assistant at UMBC in 1991 and then returned to UNLV for two years as an assistant in 1993 and 1994. He then came back to his native Maryland to spend 1995 and 1996 as Head Coach at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, MD before starting his professional indoor coaching career as an assistant Coach with the Washington Warthogs of the Continental Indoor Soccer League in 1996. He then spent 1997 and 1998 as Head Coach of the Baton Rouge Bombers of the Eastern Indoor Professional Soccer League, where he earned 1997 EISL Coach of the Year honors.

Ryerson's successful career in soccer began while playing collegiately at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  He was a two time All-America selection at Nevada-Las Vegas in 1984 and 1985. He still holds the UNLV career scoring record with 67 goals and 25 assists, and was named to the school's Hall of Fame in 1998 along with having his No. 10 jersey retired following his senior year.

Ryerson played professionally outdoors for the Maryland Bays from 1988-91and the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 1992.  He was a key member of the National Championship team winning the American Professional Soccer League title in 1990. Professionally indoors, he played for the Baltimore Blast and Washington Warthogs as well as squads in San Diego and Fort Wayne, IN, prior to becoming an assistant coach for the Warthogs in 1996.

Over five years of play with the U.S. National Team, his most memorable highlight was scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 friendly contest against Costa Rica in San Antonio, TX.

Ryerson has obtained the highest level of coaching licenses offered here in the United States.  He obtained his USSF National "A" License in 1997, his USSF National "Youth" License in 2000 and his United Soccer Coaches Association National "Premier" License along with his "Director of Coaching" license from the USCA.  He also was an instructor for the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association, conducting coaching courses to youth soccer coaches within the State of Maryland. He also served as the Director of Coaching for the Olympic Development Program. Ryerson has also been an assistant coach for both the U16 and  U18 Youth National Soccer Teams in domestic training camps.  He has also traveled internationally as an assistant coach in 2017 with the U16 Boys Youth National Team to participate in the prestigious  Montaigu Tournament in Montaigu, France.

Ryerson earned his MBA from Mount St. Mary's in 2004 and his BA at UNLV in 1988. He is a graduate of Howard County's Oakland Mills High School where he earned Howard County "Player of the Year" honors and won a state championship with the Scorpions.

Ryerson is currently involved with the Ellicott City Soccer Club as the club's general manager. The club provides opportunities for kids in the Howard County area to play competitive and recreational soccer within the Maryland youth soccer system; including those kids with special needs. Ryerson was also inducted into the "Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame" in 2006. His family resides in Ellicott City, MD.
