The Dragons women's basketball team once again showed a ton of grit as they were able to prevail over Chesapeake College 76-73. The win puts the Dragons at 10-4 for the season and 4-3 in conference which moves them up to 6th place. This was especially important with the regular season soon coming to a close and only the top 8 teams in the conference are able to play in the MD JUCO tournament.
HCC once again went into the game with just 6 active players which became dangerous withÂ
Lauren Thompson (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS)Â being in foul trouble throughout the game but still finished with 17 points on the game. However,Â
Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS)Â put the team on her back once again as she contributed her first triple-double of the season with 21 points, 17 rebounds, 12 assists, and 6 steals in her most complete performance of the season.Â
Sam Heisig (Glenelg, MD, Glenelg HS)Â also provided her usual spectacular performance with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals, 4 assists, and 3 blocks while also committing zero turnovers in the game.Â
Ebony Anderson (Baltimore, MD, Catonsville HS)Â continued her scoring proclivity with 14 points and 7 rebounds whileÂ
Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS)Â put in another yeoman's effort on the defensive side as she is currently 4th in the conference in blocks per game.Â
The Dragons were fantastic defensively winning the turnover battle 24-13 and were able to win despite shooting 34% from the field. The Skipjacks took a tied score at halftime and enjoyed their largest lead of the game in an effective 3rd quarter for the visitors. They looked assured of having the lead going into the final stanza until a Coughlin jumpshot and Anderson layup cut the Skipjacks lead to one point with just a few seconds left. Heisig was able to steal the inbound pass and get a quick lay-up that gave the Dragons a 53-52 lead at the end of the quarter. A back and forth 4th quarter was capped by a big 7-0 run for the Dragons which gave them a large enough lead to see out the game.
HCC will next take on powerhouse rivals Harford Community College on Wednesday January 27th at 5:30 PM in the Dragons Lair.
