Due to a number of different circumstances, the HCC women's basketball team travelled to Anne Arundel CC with just 5 eligible players, but were still able to come away with a 76-66 win. The victory puts the Dragons conference record at 3-1 and 8-2 overall as they continue to outplay pre-season expectations.
With star point guardÂ
Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) unable to make it to the contest, the burden of picking up the slack fell on all five of the players. Knowing that they could not afford for any of them to foul out, the Dragons played a conservative but effective defense as just one player got to 3 fouls during the contest. However, the biggest story of the day has to be freshman forwardÂ
Ebony Anderson (Baltimore, MD, Catonsville HS) who provided a career day with 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks as she stood strong in the post all game long.Â
Another big story is the continuing excellance ofÂ
Sam Heisig (Glenelg, MD, Glenelg HS) who provided an unusual triple-double performance with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and an amazing 13 steals
. Sophomore forwardÂ
Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS) was able to shake off her shooting slump adding 13 points on the game and 18 rebounds including 15 on the defensive side and 7 assists.
Lauren Thompson (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS) took over point guard duties with Coughlin out and added 12 points and 7 assists on the day. Not to be forgotten was another double-double performance in the game byÂ
Knowlej Thomas (Columbia, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) who had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a game where all 5 players had double digit points.
The Dragons will look to continue their amazing success this season against an impressive Hagerstown CC team that is 14-2 on the year and 3rd in the conference with a 4-1 record. That game will be on Saturday January 9th at the Dragons Lair; tip-off is scheduled for 5 PM.
