Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dragons Season Ends With Loss in Region XX Quarters

The Howard CC women's basketball team saw their impressive season come to an end as they fell to Garrett College 79-64. The loss brings the Dragons final record to 13-9 which is a stark improvement over the 5-16 record from last year.

The first quarter showed that the Dragons had a chance to stick with the Lakers as they finished the first stanza tied 18-18 with Lauren Thompson (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS) scoring 7 points on 3-4 shooting from the floor. Unfortunately for HCC, Thompson proceeded to shoot 1-12 for the rest of the game finishing with 10 points along with 8 rebounds.

The headline story for the game has to go to Garrett's Mariah Stem who was on fire shooting 7-15 from behind the arc on the way to a 23-point game while teammates Bria Coleman and Castina Johnson both added double-doubles to the Lakers cause.

HCC was forced to play the game with just 5 players as star guard Sam Heisig (Glenelg, MD, Glenelg HS) was out with an injury. Without Heisig, it was up to Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) to take charge for the Dragons. Coughlin did everything she could for the ladies in maroon as she finished with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, and 5 assists. With rebounding issues plaguing the Dragons all year, HCC actually matched Garrett on the boards with 4 Dragons finishing with 8 rebounds or more led by Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS) with 10 along with her 9 points.

Knowlej Thomas (Columbia, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) was forced into a starting role and provided 10 points including a couple of long range three-pointers. Ebony Anderson (Baltimore, MD, Catonsville HS) added 11 points and 8 rebounds but also had 7 costly turnovers while struggling with fatigue.

While the regular season was a resounding success compared to last year's squad, the Dragons will surely be disappointed with their inability to win a post-season game. With HCC losing sophomores Thompson, Coughlin, and Parks, Coach Maureen Shacreaw will need a strong recruiting class if she hopes to build upon this year's success.
