Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cecil Overpowers Dragons 81-69

The Howard CC women's basketball team suffered their first back-to-back loss of the season as they fell to a powerful Cecil College team 81-69. The defeat puts the Dragons at 12-7 for the season and 5-6 in conference which will make their final regular season game on Monday that much more important.

HCC got off to a roaring start in the first five minutes of the game as they jumped out to a 13-0 lead as the Dragons made their first 7 shots of the game. The first quarter ended with the Dragons holding onto a 22-15 lead against the highly rated Seahawks as Lauren Thompson (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS) and Ebony Anderson (Baltimore, MD, Catonsville HS) both finished with 8 points in the first stanza.

The Dragons had a 39-35 halftime lead as Sam Heisig (Glenelg, MD, Glenelg HS) started to heat up with a couple of 3-pointers in the 2nd quarter. The third quarter proved to be the downfall of the Dragons as the Seahawks outscored the home team 29-13 during the dreadful 10-minute stretch.

Ultimately, the game turned into the Imani Quinn show as the Cecil College forward finished the game with 26 points, 26 rebounds including 14 offensive boards, and 7 blocks as she was a dominant presence under the basket on both sides of the court. Her fellow front court teammate Dony'e Moses finished the game with 20 points and 20 rebounds herself as the Dragons struggled with the size of the Cecil forwards.

Heisig proved to be the must effective Dragon on the day with 18 points on 7-10 shooting as well as 9 rebounds and 6 steals. Thompson finished with 16 points but was just 3-13 from behind the arc. Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) rebounded from a tough shooting performance at Southern Maryland to score 12 points on 6-13 from the floor. Forward Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS) suffered a tough game shooting, but lead the team with 5 assists as she made some excellent passes throughout the game and still finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Anderson put in 10 points of her own while Knowlej Thomas (Columbia, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) added 5 points and 4 rebounds off the bench.

The Dragons will finish their regular season schedule on Monday February 8th as they travel to Prince George's CC at 5 PM. The Dragons are in control of their own destiny as a win will guarantee them a spot in the MD JUCO conference tournament while a loss would likely take them out of the tournament.
