Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dragons Punch Ticket to Conference Tourney with Win at PGCC

The Howard CC women's basketball team captured the win they needed to book their spot in the MD JUCO conference tournament with a 70-51 win over Prince George's CC. The victory ends the Dragons regular season with a 13-7 record and a 6-6 conference record that places them in the #7 spot in the tournament.

HCC came into the game knowing that a win would get them in the tournament where as a loss would knock them out. The Dragons were able to come out firing with a Sam Heisig (Glenelg, MD, Glenelg HS) jump shot 10 seconds into the game and HCC would hold onto the lead the rest of the game.

PGCC's Coneisha Smith came into the game leading the conference averaging 28 points per game, and she did not disappoint her hometown fans as she scored 30 points before fouling out with 5 minutes left in the game.

But this game was all about the Dragons ability to play a complete team game as they looked to correct their mistakes from their last two losing efforts. Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS) scored a career high 19 points for the Dragons along with 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) matched Parks with 19 points of her own along with 15 rebounds; 8 of which were on the offensive end.

Ebony Anderson (Baltimore, MD, Catonsville HS) provided 9 points and 8 rebounds while Heisig and Lauren Thompson (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS) also finished the game with 9 points each. Knowlej Thomas (Columbia, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) provided some valuable minutes off the bench with 5 points and 4 rebounds.

The Dragons will begin their quest to a conference championship on Thursday February 11th as they take on #2 seed Baltimore City Community College at 5 PM in the Garrett College arena in western Maryland. HCC had played Baltimore City at BCCC earlier in the season and almost upset the Panthers in a huge 4th quarter comeback; an effort that surely will give the Dragons confidence that the highly rated Panthers are beatable.
