Day 1 - Pool Play
After a long hiatus volley ball was finally back on the Howard Community College campus for the 15th annual Dragon Invitational. The Dragons started off with what could be considered the top match of the weekend against CCBC-Essex. In the a 5 set nail biter the Dragons were able to come out victorious thanks to sophomores
Sara Few (Taneytown, MD/Carroll Christian) and
Alana Matson (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough). Few had 29 assists which helped the team get 41 kills over the course of the game.Â
Alana Matson (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) had 14 of those 41 kills to lead the team. The effort was helped along by some clutch serves by
Lindsey Major (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach). In the second game of the day the Dragons faced off against Community College of Rhode Island who was one of the final teams in the weekends tournament. The Dragons were able to control the style of game and take this one 3-0.Â
Sara Few (Taneytown, MD/Carroll Christian) again led the team with 23 assists along with 6 kills and this time the whole team got in on the party,
Alana Matson (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) (9 kills),
Trinity Smith (Laurel, MD/Laurel) (6 kills), and
Dasia Smith (Owings Mills, MD/Milford Mill) (6 kills) all helped add to a team total 31 klls in 3 sets. The final game of the night was against Nassau Community College and the Dragons looked to finish off the night with a perfect 3-0 day. This was not to be though, as they dropped the match 0-3 and looked to bounce back the next day in the single elimination tournament.
Day 2 - Tournament
The second day of the Dragon Invitational saw the start of tournament play and the Dragons taking on the Community College of Beaver County. The match started with Beaver taking the first set and the Dragons looking a little sluggish after a late night of play the day before. The team was able to rally though taking the next 3 sets and secure a victory 3-1. The Dragons final match of the invitational was against the College of Southern Maryland, the eventual winner of the invitational. The Dragons fought valiantly keeping each set close, but eventually succumbed to the champions in straight sets. The Dragons looked promising in the opening 5 games of the season and look to build on a weekend of great competition.
Upcoming:
- The Dragons are 3-2 and look to stay above .500 when they take on Harford Community College at home on Friday 9/8/2017
