Columbia, MD - A free kick six minutes into overtime by
Anthony Perez Rodriguez (Columbia, MD/Hammond) lifted the Dragons to a 2-1 victory over Prince Goerge's in the Regional Tournament Semifinals.
The game was a tense affair with five yellow cards given out including two in the first 30 minutes of the contest along with a combined 38 fouls called on the two teams.
The Dragons got the better chances in the first half and were able to break through after 30 minutes of play starting with a nice
Bryce Waller (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) free kick to
Daniel Fuentes (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) into the side of the goal box. Fuentes got to the end line and chipped a cross to the back post where
Anderson Mejia Marroquin (Elkridge, MD/Hammond)Â volleyed the ball into the net from point blank range to give Howard the lead.
Prince George's was able to tie the game up midway into the second quarter when Jalen Washington picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and was able to dribble into the box and shoot into the net despite goalkeeper
Simon Bradford (Columbia, MD/Hammond) getting his hand on the shot.
With just three minutes left in the second half, Marroquin found a streaking Rodriguez wide open on the right side, but his shot hit the near side post to keep the Owls alive.
With the game going into a golden goal overtime, Marroquin made a great run down the left side and was fouled just outside of the Owl's goal box as he cut inside. On the ensuing free kick,
Cesar Torres (Jessup, MD/Hammond) back heeled a pass to Rodriguez who powered a low shot into the bottom left corner of the net to win the game for Howard.
The Dragons will advance to the Region 20/District H Division III Championship game on Saturdat, October 27 at 3 PM where they will take on #1 seeded Anne Arundel in a rematch of a hard fought 1-0 Riverhawks win in the regular season.
