How It Happened
  • Rowan-Burlington got on the board first as a giveaway by Howard in their own half allowed Deanna D'Imperio with a chance to play Emma Moore through and the Barons took the lead just 90 seconds into the game.
  • Nikki Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Adventista de Itapecerica da Serra) got through on goal thanks to a great long ball by Leigh McDonald (Loveland, CO/Mountain View) but pulled her shot just wide left.
  • D'Imperio picked up a second assist in the 20th minute as she fed sophomore forward Cassie Kennedy to take a 2-0 lead for the Barons.
  • The Barons goalkeeper Amanda Ianniciello attempted to stop a Vieira breakaway, but handled the ball outside of her box giving the Dragons a free kick just outside of the box. Vieira took the kick and powered a shot into the top right corner of the net to pull one back for the Dragons.
  • Rowan answered almost immediately as Kennedy got past the Dragons defense and buried a low shot past goalkeeper Jada Freshour (Finksburg, MD/Century) to get the Barons back up 3-1.
  • The high scoring first half continued with Amila Smajlovic hitting an in-swinging corner kick that found its way into the far side netting for an "Olympic goal".
  • Controversy ensued at the end of the first half as Vieira had another breakaway but was taken down by a slide tackle from behind Sophia Rogers just outside of the box, but the referee saw fit to only produce a yellow card on the play. Vieira attempted a similar shot that produced a goal the first time, but was unable to keep the shot under the cross bar.
  • The second half saw more of a midfield battle with fewer chances, but the Barons were able to extend their lead to 5-1. Howard struggled to clear the ball out of their own box and Emma Moore took advantage as she put one into the roof of the net from the middle of the box for her second of the day.
  • Vieira bagged a brace late in the second half as
  • Freshour picked up 11 saves in her debut for the Dragons in goal as she was kept busy all day long.
