How It Happened

  • The Vikings used some early pressure to get the first shot on goal four minutes in as Rodrigo Pupe Rosas got into the box and hit a hard shot that Dragons goalkeeper Simon Bradford (Columbia, MD/Hammond) parried over the crossbar.
  • Mercer found the net 10 minutes later as a cross into the box found Daiki Nagata wide open on the back post as he tapped it in.
  • Just four minutes before halftime saw the Vikings double their lead on a nice through ball that was chipped past Bradford and into the net.
  • The Dragons got their first shot on goal with a minute left in the first half as Anthony Perez Rodriguez (Columbia, MD/Hammond) took a free kick from 35 yards out that was comfortably saved.
  • Howard came out strong early in the second half as Eze Ruben (Laurel, MD/Laurel) got free down the right wing and had back-to-back point blank shots saved by the Mercer goalkeeper.
  • The breakthrough for Howard finally came after 67 minutes of play as a great cross by Daniel Fuentes (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) was tapped in by Brian Hernandez-Canaca (Laurel, MD/Laurel) to halve the deficit.
  • Mercer put the game away with just seven minutes left in regulation as Simone Libreri got open down the left side and powered a shot into the top corner of the net on a tight angle.
  • The Dragons Anderson Mejia Marroquin (Elkridge, MD/Hammond) got a couple of glorious chances late in the game, but the first one was saved from close range while the second attempt on a breakaway floated just wide of the net.
