Wilmington, NC - The women's soccer team took their annual trip to North Carolina and came home with a couple of losses despite some impressive performances. Going up against district rival Oxford Emory first, offense was tough to come by as neither team scored for the first 70 minutes of the game.
It was the Eagles who broke through first on a header from the middle of the box. With time running out for the Dragons, the ball was hit into the Oxford Emory box and was knocked around a bit before defender
Busi Sokoya (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) was able to get a good foot on the ball and hit it home with just 90 seconds left in regulation.Â
The match was sent to overtime where the Eagles got a breakaway five minutes into the extra period that Nadia Dixon was able to score for the golden goal. Goalkeeper
Cassandra Padellford (Truckee, CA/Truckee) came up with five saves on the day despite allowing the two goals.
In the second game of the weekend, Howard went up against hosts Cape Fear in a Sunday matinee. The high powered Sea Devils offense managed 19 shots with Padellford making 10 saves in the game. Cape Fear was called on 14 fouls for the game as they played a very physical brand of soccer and were shown just one yellow card on the day, but in the end a Carly Higgins 70th minute header into the goal was all the Sea Devils needed to come away with the win.
Nikki Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) managed four shots in the game as the Dragons struggled to put much pressure on the offensive side.Â
Howard's next test will be in the Dragon Invitational where they will host Brookdale and the Fashion Institute of Technology on September 15 and 16 respectively.
