Columbia, MD - The Dragons held up against the strong Prince George's squad for the totality of the game, however the Owls were able to come out on top to defeat Howard 87-86 in an intense match.
Â
The Owls came out strong and scored 14 unanswered points to start the game until
Amar Shivers (Washington, DC/Central) came down the center of the court to make a layup to put Howard on the board, but the Dragons saw themselves go into a 20-2 hole after five minutes of play.
Â
Midway through the first half,
Emeka Eni (Pesaro, Italy/Lewisville) and Shivers had an impressive combination of passes down the entirety of the court which presented Shivers the opportunity to convert a layup for the Dragons as he scored all six of his points in the first half.
Â
With five minutes left in the first half, the Dragons closed the Owls lead to just 10 points on a
Jesse Calloway (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) three pointer, but Howard still trailed Prince Georges 44-26 going into halftime.
Â
Starting out the second half,
Jesse Calloway (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was the first to put points on the board for Howard. Immediately following, the Owls lost control of the ball that
Jaden Stonework (Clinton, MD/Gwynn Park) took advantage of and secured a layup along with a Calloway three pointer for a 7-0 Howard run.
Jordan Reid (Silver Spring, MD/Albert Einstein) started to get hot midway through the second half to fuel a 6-0 Dragons run as Reid scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half.
Â
With six minutes left in play, Calloway sunk a three point jump shot to cut the Owls lead to eight points to make it a single digit deficit for the first time since the first two minutes of the contest. Calloway hit another three pointer and was fouled to convert a four-point play with five minutes to go as Howard trailed 78-73.
Â
The two teams exchanged baskets in quick succession to keep the score status quo, but the aggressiveness of Calloway saw him make a couple free throws on back-to-back possessions to put the Dragons down 82-81 with just over a minute left.
Â
Howard failed to capitalize on a chance to take the lead forcing the Dragons to foul and put Prince George's on the free throw line. With Howard down by four and on defense, the Owls were forced into a bad turnover that led to another Calloway long range jumper to make it a one point game once again.
Â
Owls superstar Alex Morales made both free throws in a night where he finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists to put Prince George's up by three with six seconds left. Calloway put up the potential game tying shot, but the shot was too long and was tipped in by Reid at the buzzer as the Dragons fell just one point short of an incredible comeback.
Â
Calloway finished with a season high 26 points thanks to a 5-7 night from behind the arc while Eni and
Nathan Ferguson (Silver Spring, MD/Bethesda) each added 12 points.
Â
The Dragons will travel to Chesapeake in a 7 PM match on Friday, January 11th as they hunt for their first conference victory of the year.
