Largo, MD -
Anderson Marroquin (Elkridge, MD/Hammond) scored twice for the Dragons to lead them in a huge victory over rival Prince George's 2-1. With the victory, Howard is assured of the #1 seed for the Region 20 Division III tournament where they will now be the favorites to earn a spot in the national tournament.
The Dragons had the first great chance on goal just 90 seconds into the contest as
Lassana Diakite (Mali/LCAD) had a shot saved by Prince George's goalkeeper Austin Geier. After a few wasteful Owl chances,
Brandon Muma (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) had a couple of shots saved by Geier.
In the 17th minute. the Dragons earned a foul in the goal box which allowed Marroquin to step up and net his third penalty kick goal in as many chances for the year to give Howard the lead. Howard continued to put Geier to the test as
Trevor Ndambi (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) saw a shot parried away followed by a couple more Marroquin chances. A Diakite corner kick was headed on by
Alexander Estrada (Ellicott City, MD/Oakland Mills) only to have it saved with Muma also having a header saved.
Howard kept up the pressure in the second half as a
Joshua Martinez (Hyattsville,MD/High Point) corner kick was nearly headed in by Marroquin in the 72nd minute. It would take just 30 seconds for Marroquin to make up for the miss as he was able to get in on goal and net his conference, region, and nationally leading 24th goal of the season.
The Dragons never let up with shots by
Rene Sosa (Silver Spring/Blake) and
Luis Wardcantori (Fulton, MD/Reservoir) nearly adding to the lead in the last minute, but the Howard defense that allowed just four shots on goal in the contest allowed a late consolation goal to the Owls in the 79th minute to make the score look closer than the game actually was.
Howard will return home to face Allegany College of Maryland on Tuesday, October 15 for a 4 PM matinee.
