Columbia, MD – The Dragons faced off against a historically powerful Harcum College Bears and gave it a good run before succumbing in the late stages of the game.
Howard's first half shooting got off to a slow start as they went 26% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. The new look Dragons came in confident of their three point shooting ability, as they put up 23 shots from long range in the first half with
Ciara Little (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) and
Tyteana Seymore (Washington, D.C./Columbia Heights) hitting a couple each.
Harcum was able to get the ball inside often against the Dragons, scoring 50 points in the paint with five players all finishing in double-digit points. The Bears had only six active players in the game and found themselves in foul trouble early as Je'la Thomas and Mikala Williams had three fouls each going into the halftime break. Both went on to get their fourth fouls early in the fourth quarter with Mikala Williams fouling out midway through the final period.
The Dragons defense was the true story of the game, forcing 34 turnovers in the game including an astonishing 14 steals by
Ciara Little (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) as she picked up an unconventional double-double as she led the team with 16 points. Howard held Harcum to just 13 points in the third quarter as the Dragons went on a 10-0 run to take a 45-41 lead. The Bears answered with seven straight points of their own, but a three pointer by
Kiyah King (Cambridge, MD/Oakland Mills) tied the game followed by a
Kyrstin Bowen (Westminster, MD/Mount Airy Christian) offensive rebound and put back to give Howard a 50-48 lead after three quarters.
King finished with 12 points, matched by Seymore with
Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) adding eight.
The Dragons will stay at home to take on Rowan-Burlington on Saturday, November 9 at 1 PM.
