Howard Completes Dramatic Comeback in 67-66 Win

Columbia, MD - In one of the more exciting games in recent memory, the Dragons were able to come from behind to defeat the Rowan Burlington Barons 67-66.

The Dragons got out to a slow start, scoring just eight points in the first quarter as they had plenty of open looks but hit just 4-21 including 0-9 from three point range.

However, Howard's defense continued to be the strength of the team as they forced 16 turnovers in the first half and 31 in the game as they were able to stay within striking range.

Howard changed their offensive strategy at halftime and decided to work the ball inside more while also taking advantage of fast break opportunities off the turnovers. Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) really picked up the pace as she scored 11 of her 25 points in the third quarter along with 6 of her 11 rebounds in a dominating 10 minutes of play for the sophomore guard.

With the Dragons down seven starting the fourth quarter, Rowan Burlington came out with a three pointer to seemingly put the game out of reach for the home team. But Howard fought back with a vengeance as they went on an 8-0 run capped by a Kiyah King (Cambridge, MD/Oakland Mills) layup after a Jones steal. Burlington increased their lead back to 61-55 with six minutes left, but Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) started another strong Howard run on a fast break layup followed by a Ciara Little (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) runner.

After Jones hit a couple free throws, Little was able to snag a defensive rebound and kick the ball up to McCormick for another easy bucket to give Howard their first lead of the contest. Just when everything seemed to be going Howard's way, the Barons hit a big three to take the lead back. With the game on the line as Burlington led 66-65 with a minute and a half remaining, Jones snagged an offensive rebound and put the layup in to give Howard the lead. Ashlyn McInerney (Hyattsville, MD/Hammond) was able to grab one last steal for the Dragons to seal the victory.

In addition to Jones' double-double, Howard got big contributions from Little with 12 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists. McCormick, Seymore and King all added eight points each as Howard scored 42 of their 67 points in the paint.

The Dragons will next travel to Hagerstown on Wednesday, November 13 for a 6 PM game as Howard will look to continue their upward momentum.
