Bel Air, MD - Going up against a top NJCAA Division I program, the Dragons were able to use a late streak of three pointers as the Dragons upset the Monroe Mustangs 82-67.
Howard got out to a strong start in the game, especially on the defensive side where the Dragons held their opponents to just 26 first half points and led by eight at halftime. The baskets seemed to widen in the second half as both teams found their scoring strokes more with Monroe surging back to tie the game at 60-60 with six minutes left in the game.Â
The Dragons responded by hitting nearly every three pointer for the rest of the game, started by
Christian Matthews (Clinton, MD/National Christian) splashing down from the corner three on his way to a 12-point game.
Kelvin Sellman (Temple Hills, MD/Crossland) followed that up with three consecutive makes from long range as he finished with a game high 18 points to put the Dragons comfortably ahead at the end as the final score did not necessarily reflect the drama of the game.
Joel Webb (Forestville, MD/Wise) was huge in the game with 14 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor and seven rebounds.
Naquan Williams-Day (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills),
Deven Richmond (Bowie, MD/DeMatha) and
Daeshawn Eaton (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) each added double-digit points with 12, 11, and 10 respectively.Â
Howard will have little time to celebrate as they face another national powerhouse in Harcum College on Sunday, December 22 at 2 PM in the final game of the Harford Hoops Classic.
