Largo, MD – The Dragons were unable to hold a big fourth quarter lead as the officials took center stage in the 76-73 conference loss to Prince George's.
Howard fell behind early in the contest, but came roaring back in a big second quarter of a low scoring opening to the game. The Dragons extended that lead all the way to 15 with 6:36 left in the fourth quarter and appeared to be well in control of the contest.
But the massive number of fouls called by the officials took their toll on the Dragons as players started to foul out. Eventually, the 37 fouls called against the Dragons led to five Howard players fouling out which proved troublesome as they only had nine healthy players coming into the contest. The Dragons still held a 68-67 lead with two minutes left when
Kyrstin Bowen (Westminster, MD/Mount Airy Christian) fouled out, leaving Howard with just four players left on the court. From there they were unable to hold on to the lead, ultimately falling to a go-ahead basket with just 30 seconds left by the Owls.
Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) finished with 16 points and nine rebounds before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.
Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) scored 14 as she fouled out early in the fourth along with
Ciara Little (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) adding seven points before also picking up her fifth foul. Bowen nearly picked up a triple-double in the contest with nine points, eight rebounds and an astounding 10 blocks.
Ashlyn McInerney (Hyattsville, MD/Hammond) was the only starter to not foul out, as she closed out the game with 15 points.
Howard will return home on Saturday, December 7
th at 3 PM where they will take on the Monroe-Bronx Express.
