Columbia, MD - The Howard CC women's basketball team defeated the Harford Fighting Owls for the first time since the 2010-2011 season with a historic 57-53 victory for the Dragons.
The low scoring game saw both teams struggle from the field and slow the pace down significantly from the start as the Fighting Owls had only five active players for the game. The Dragons held onto a slim lead for most of the game before Harford came back to take the lead with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) hit a big jumper in the paint to tie the game at 47-47 then
Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) made a couple of layups to take the lead back. McCormick was the one to deliver the dagger with 30 seconds left as her three pointer gave Howard a five point lead over a Harford team that finished the last five minutes of the game with just four players on the court.
With Howard needing their stars to step up, McCormick and Jones answered the call as they both came through with double-doubles as McCormick found her long range shooting stroke with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Jones scored 19 points with 12 rebounds including eight on the offensive side.
Kyrstin Bowen (Westminster, MD/Mount Airy Christian) chipped in eight points and seven rebounds wih
Ashlyn McInerney (Hyattsville, MD/Hammond) scoring on a couple of long range makes.
The Dragons will continue a stretch of tough conference games as they host Frederick on Friday, January 17 at 5 PM.
