Rockville, MD – The Dragons were able to claw their way to a gritty road win, overcoming the Montgomery Raptors 100-90.
The first half was a back and forth slug fest as the two teams exchanged leads with neither team leading by more than five. Despite Howard missing a bevy of layups in the opening period, the Dragons trailed by just one at halftime led by the Montgomery trio of Isaiah Jennings, Agyei Edwards, and Nicholas Johnson that combined to score 80 points in the game. Montgomery jumped ahead in the opening nine minutes of the second half as well, working their way up to a 10 point lead at 68-58.
The turn-around started on a layup by
Christian Matthews (Clinton, MD/National Christian) followed in kind by
Cole Harshman (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) and
Naquan Williams-Day (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) for a quick 6-0 run. The Dragons' defense clamped down and created a number of fast break opportunities including a three pointer by Harshman to put the stamp on a 17-3 run midway through the second half.
Kelvin Sellman (Temple Hills, MD/Crossland) started to get hot as he made some clutch baskets in the lane, from the free throw line, and from behind the arc scoring all 14 of his points in the second half.
Daeshawn Eaton (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) played all 20 minutes of the second half and scored 16 of his 23 in the latter half of the game including, doing damage in the paint and at the charity stripe along with picking up 10 rebounds and five assists. Williams-Day added a double-double to his name with 16 points and 12 rebounds while
Michael Gray (Glendale, MD/Bowie) scored 15. Harshman chipped in 13 including a trio of treys and
Joel Webb (Forestville, MD/Wise) put in a yeoman's effort with nine points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Howard will complete their regular season schedule with their sophomore night festivities on Friday, February 28 at 7 PM against Cecil College.
