Dragons Upset Raptors 82-79

Rockville, MDMia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) scored a season high 30 points in arguably the best performance of her collegiate career to lead the Dragons to a 82-79 upset victory over the Montgomery Raptors in their penultimate regular season game.

The Dragons caught fire from long range early with four baskets from behind the arc, but still trailed after the opening 10 minutes of play. Trailing by seven in the second quarter, Howard turned it around on both sides of the court as they led by as much as nine in a dominating period.

The fourth quarter was a heavy weight prize fight with the two teams trading blows back and forth. Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) hit a couple of three pointers to give the Dragons a lead at 75-74 with three minutes left. McCormick continued her aggressive ways around the basket with a big layup to extend Howard's lead.

Montgomery hit a three pointer with a minute left to tie the game at 77-77 and then the Dragons turned the ball over which led to a couple of Raptor free throws to take the lead.

With 20 seconds left, Jones drove down the base line and dished under the basket to Kyrstin Bowen (Westminster, MD/Mount Airy Christian) for a layup and foul to complete a three point play to give Howard the lead at 80-79 in what ultimately turned out to be the game winner.

Jones finished the game with 19 points and 16 rebounds as her aggressiveness around the basket was a major factor in the game. Bowen nearly missed a triple-double with nine points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks and Ashlyn McInerney (Hyattsville, MD/Hammond) hit four from long range to give her 18 points on the night.

The Dragons will return home for the regular season finale and sophomore night as they host Cecil College on Friday, February 28 at 5 PM.
