Columbia, MD - The Howard CC Dragons controlled possession for much of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net as they fell to the Anne Arundel Riverhawks 1-0.
From the start, the Dragons came close to grabbing the lead with
Evan Doten (Costa Rica/River Hill) taking his first shot of nine shots for the game in the 3
rd minute off a free kick that went just high of the net. Keeping a fast paced offense, the Dragons were able to keep possession of the ball for much of the first half, creating shooting opportunities along with a trio of corner kicks early on. In the 12
th minute,
Dylan Portillo (Bladensburg, MD/El Salvador) took a corner kick and sending it to
Jamoy Myers (Jamaica/Sunfire (FL)) who took a powerful shot curling just wide of the goal. Doten continued to threaten the Riverhawks goal midway through the first half as his second shot of the game was saved by Anne Arundel goalie Zane Saab, who held down his fort and made a great save to keep the Dragons off the board.
Moving into the second half, Nicki Llerena took the opportunity given to him and powered in his second goal of the season on a driven low free kick to put the Riverhawks on the board. On a controversial call, the referee gave Anne Arundel a penalty kick in the 78
th minute. Trevor Militello stepped up to take the penalty kick for the Riverhawks, but Dragons goalkeeper
Gabriel Viteri (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) made the astonishing save. Militello then tried to score on the rebound but yet again Viteri locks down his goal and made another breathtaking save, only to see Llerena try to kick the ball out of the hands of Viteri which earned him the straight red card.
During the remainder of the game, the Dragons were playing man up and refused to take their foot off of the gas pedal. With trying to get some sort of movement, the Dragons put up six more shots to try and get themselves up on the board but ultimately could not break through the stalwart Riverhawks despite the Dragons outshooting Anne Arundel 25-5.
Howard will look to rebound as they next travel to Harford as they take on the Fighting Owls at 5 PM on Tuesday, October 5.
