Columbia, MD - Going up against their old rivals, the Dragons shocked the Montgomery College Raptors and routing their neighbors 5-1.
A dream start for the Dragons began in the 5th minute as
Molly Nichols (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) played through
Tessa Cinotti (Laurel, MD/Reservoir)Â to get the Dragons on the board early. Howard doubled that lead before the 10 minute mark as a cross by
Tahlia Stangherlin (Hamilton, Ontario/Pallotti) was flicked on by
Jenna Naumann (Sykesville, MD/Century) and finished by Nichols from close range to score her fifth of the season.Â
It took just seven more minutes for the Dragons to strike again as a through ball by Amy Rodriguez found a great run out of the midfield by
Madison Dzubak (Highland, MD/River Hill) who found the back of the net for the second time this season.
The game stabilized for a while after that with both teams creating chances as
Hailey Murray (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) made six saves, most of which from long distance, to keep the Raptors chances of coming from behind slim. In the 65th minute, a pass up field by Dzubak found Stangherlin who cut around the Raptors defense and goalkeeper and allowed her to hit a shot into the empty net. It was her fourth goal in the last three games and her team leading ninth on the season.
Less than a minute later, Cinotti stole the ball in the Raptors' half of the field and sliced through the defense to score her second goal of the game and the seventh of the season to put the exclamation mark on the game. Montgomery would find a consolation goal late, but it would prove to be the Dragons' day as they earned their 10th victory of the season.
The Dragons final regular season home game will come less than 48 hours after this match, as Howard hosts the College of Southern Maryland on Friday, October 15 at 4 PM.
