Frederick, MD – The Dragons were unable to overcome early mistakes as they fell to a talented Frederick Cougars team 3-1. Howard suffered numerous injuries throughout the contest and limped their way to a difficult conclusion.
Frederick was able to get on the scoreboard first after 10 minutes to play as a bad turnover by Howard saw the Cougars capitalize by scoring into the far side netting. Two minutes later it was a similar story as the Cougars scored on a failed clearance by the Dragons defense, this time scoring on the near side of the Howard goal.
With Howard building up momentum, it was the 20th minute when
Trevor Kerr (/Reservoir) made a great run down the left side and was taken down from behind bringing out a yellow card directed at the Frederick right back. On the ensuing free kick, a clever set piece saw
Oscar Ayala (/Laurel) back heel a pass to
Leonard Dunor (/Sheyenne) who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Both teams had numerous chances with the exciting back and forth action where the two teams combined to take 34 shots, it was the Cougars who were able to come through with a big insurance goal. A long cross by Frederick was volleyed home to put the game out of reach for Howard.
Dunor had several more good shots towards the end as he took eight in all for the game.
Howard will return home to host the Harford Fighting Owls on Thursday, April 15 for a 4 PM home opener.
