Dramatic Late Goal Gives Howard Big Win Over Potomac State

Keyser, WV – A match that was filled with action and tension saw Casey Boin (Ellicott City, MD/Mount De Sales) score the game winning in the 83rd minute to give the Dragons their biggest win of the season over Potomac State 3-2.

Howard struck first in the seventh minute of the game as a cross by Casey Boin (Ellicott City, MD/Mount De Sales) was karate kicked into the top left corner of the net by Destiny Denton (Memphis, TN/St. Vincent Pallotti) for a highlight reel goal.

Potomac State answered back seven minutes later on an unlucky deflection as a Howard clearance went off a Catamount player and into the Dragon net.

The Dragons came right back at the Catamounts in the 27th minute as a perfectly weighted long ball by Jaylene Sotelo (/) found Molly Nichols (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) running into the box as she scored with her left foot to give the lead back to Howard. Potomac State compounded their problems with a straight red card a minute later, forcing them to play a player down for 2/3 of the game.

The Catamounts showed grit in the second half and were able to earn another goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the 77th minute. With time winding down, a strong drive by Nichols down the right side saw her cross get to Sotelo who took a hard shot that was saved, only to have Boin pounce on it to score what would prove to be the game winning goal.

After Olivia Jackson (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) went down injured late in the first half, Giselle Castillo (Falls Church, VA/Justice) filled in once again and made eight saves, including a diving effort late to preserve the win for the Dragons.

Howard will next travel to the College of Southern Maryland on Monday, October 17 at 2 PM for their final regional game of the regular season with major playoff implications on the line.
