Columbia, MD - A fantastic defensive display by the Dragons combined by an offensive led by Nhakyia Smith and her triple-double performance led to a comfortable 59-15 win over the Westchester Vikings.
The Dragons held Westchester to just four points in the first half as the Vikings didn't make a single shot from the field until 26 minutes of game time had passed. The defense forced 26 turnovers with 15 steals, holding their opponents to a 5-47 shooting day from the field and 1-24 from three point range.
Smith showed great poise in the game, controlling the pace of play and making plays all over the court with a final score line that included 10 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists, and five rebounds for her first career triple-double. Howard also got double-double games from
Julia Harrington (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) with 10 points and 10 rebounds and
Mikiyah Mallett (Pasadena, MD/Old Mill) with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Nyla Thomas (Laurel, MD/James H. Blake) added some much needed offense to the team off the bench with 11 points and three assists, using her speed to open up holes in the Westchester defense.
Howard dominated the paint all game with a 62-24 rebounding margin including 24 offensive rebounds for the home side. The Dragons scored 50 of their points in the paint including 22 of which on the fast break.
