Columbia, MD -
Andrew Mills (Owings Mills, MD/Newtown) scored 24 points in a chaotic environment as the Dragons were able to withstand the Harford Fighting Owls 76-65. The win marks the 100th career win for head coach
Mike Smelkinson as a Dragon in his sixth season at the helm of the program.
The first half was defined by strong defense on both sides forcing a combined 29 turnovers in a low scoring half. The Dragons jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Howard never trailed in the game. Harford was able to work their way back to tie the game at 19-19, but a
Cameron Watts (Columbia, MD/Boys Latin) three point along with a couple of big
Jalen Bowie (Frederick, MD/Frederick) shots vaulted Howard back into the lead.Â
The Fighting Owls made another run midway through the second half, cutting the Howard margin down to three at 45-42 before a Howard run led by
Benjamin Murphy (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin),
O'Meech Wilson (Glen Burnie, MD/North County), and
Ethan Wilson (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) slowed the Harford momentum. Watts provided another dagger a few minutes later as his four-point play extended the Howard lead. Mills followed that up with a mid-range jumper and a tough tip-in to ice the game.
In addition to Mills' game high 24, Murphy added 10 while Bowie and Watts each scored nine.
Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) came up with eight big second half points.
