Keyser, WV - The Dragons second quarter dominance held them in the game, but ultimately fell to the Potomac State Catamounts 79-72 in the season opener.
Howard had to shake off some rust in the first quarter as they had trouble hitting shots early on. The next 10 minutes was a totally different story as they scored 26 points in the second quarter getting to the rim and to the free throw line.
Down 38-36 at halftime, the Dragons took the lead early in the third quarter after a three pointer by
Kalani Corkeron (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) and a put back by
Mikiyah Mallett (Pasadena, MD/Old Mill). The two teams continued to go back and forth in the third with another by three by Corkeron and layup by
Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/Charles H. Flowers) once again getting Howard ahead followed by five straight points by
Nhaikyia Smith (Waldorf, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) for a 9-0 run. The Catamounts immediately answered back with a 10-0 run of their own to lead by three at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter saw Potomac State open up their lead early on, despite threes from
Sarah Deese (Woodbine, MD/Century), Corkeron, and
Nyla Thomas (Laurel, MD/James H. Blake) to slow down that momentum. Unfortunately the Dragons ran out of time to complete the comeback as they faltered down the stretch.
Thomas led the team with 17 points off the bench, with Corkeron scoring 14 along with Smith and Mallett adding 12 each.
Howard will look to get into the win column in their home opener on Monday, November 7 at 5 PM when Anne Arundel comes to the Dragons Lair.
