Ellicott City, MD - The Dragons enjoyed a thrilling doubleheader in their first ever home games in program history as they split with Cayuga CC.
The Dragons got out to a great start as
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) scored in the first and third innings with her incredible speed on display. Howard extended their lead in the fourth on a bunt single by
Danielle Thompson (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) and got another one in the fifth with
Erika Goodwin (Laurel, MD/Hammond) singling home Huber.
Cayuga came back in the sixth inning with four runs to take a brief lead, but the Dragons charged back with four runs in the bottom half highlighted by a
Grace Tolle (Woodstock, MD/Marriotts Ridge) bases clearing double to make it an 8-4 lead. Sadly that lead would not hold up as the Spartans scored five runs in the seventh to steal the win away.
Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard) racked up seven strikeouts while the offensive standout performance of Huber included going 3-4 with a walk, four runs and three stolen bases in the game.
In the second game of the series, Tolle continued to add to her RBI total as she drove in
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) in the first innings. The Dragon bats broke out for six runs in the third inning including a Burdette bullet down the left field line for an RBI double. Tolle, Goodwin,
Sarah Phelps (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial), Thompson, and Huber all added RBI hits to bat around the order.
Cayuga answered back with two runs in the top of the 5th inning, but Tolle looped an RBI double to left center to score Burdette and
Melanie Czepinska (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) followed by a Hobert laser to left field to score Tolle which ended the game thanks to the mercy rule.
Goodwin pitched a gem, giving up just three hits and two unearned runs with four strikeouts to pick up her second win of the season. Tolle finished the day with 8 RBI over the two games while Burdette scored three times.
