Catonsville, MD - A strong first game for the Dragons was spoiled be a game two loss that forced a split with the neighboring rival CCBC Catonsville Cardinals.
Howard got out to a great start to the day with a five inning shutout over the once vaunted Cardinals squad. The Dragons loaded the bases in the first and saw
Erika Goodwin (Laurel, MD/Hammond) drive in
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) to get on the board. More runs came in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI triple by
Danielle Thompson (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) to score
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) who then scored on a
Grace Tolle (Woodstock, MD/Marriotts Ridge) RBI single to make it 3-0.
The game truly opened up in the fifth inning as Goodwin led things off with a triple.
Brittney Dix (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) drove her in on the next at bat followed by a big two RBI double by Burdette to score
Sarah Phelps (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Dix. Thompson would come up with another big hit for the Dragons with a two RBI single to score Huber and Burdette to reach the magic number of an eight run lead.
Starting pitcher recorded her second 1-2-3 inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth to close the game out in five innings. She finished the game with a two hit gem, with just one walk allowed and six strikeouts needing only 55 pitches to get the win.
Game two started out well for the Dragons again and an RBI groundout by Thompson scored Burdette and a bases loaded opportunity saw Goodwin get an RBI hit by pitch. The Cardinals answered back with two runs in the first inning, five more in the second and two more in the third as their bats finally got going.
Burdette pulled back two runs for the Dragons with a little league home run to make it a 10-4 deficit. Catonsville scored one more in the fourth and then walked it off in the sixth inning to end the game due to the run rule.
The Dragons will get back to their friendly home confines against another local rival as Montgomery arrives on Wedneday, April 6 at 3 PM.
