Dragons Sweep Past Raptors, Raise Money for Charity

Ellicott City, MD - The first night doubleheader in program history for the Dragons' softball team was as productive as they get, sweeping a doubleheader over regional rival Montgomery College while also raising $4000 for pediatric cancer charity.

The Dragons did not have a single baserunner in the first three innings of the game, before finally breaking out in the fourth with a Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) triple followed by a line drive home run by Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) to break the deadlock. Montgomery pulled a run back in the fifth, but a Burdette moonshot solo home run followed by a Grace Tolle (Woodstock, MD/Marriotts Ridge) RBI double to score Danielle Thompson (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) after her double made it a comfortable 5-1 lead.

Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard) was able to handle the rest from there, striking out seven on her way to a complete game victory.

Game two saw the Dragons stay hot with the bats out of the gates, exploding for five runs in the first and six more in the second to take a commanding lead. Thompson continued to increase her slugging percentage with a 2 RBI double followed by RBIs from Hobert, Erika Goodwin (Laurel, MD/Hammond), and Brittney Dix (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach). Thompson tallied another RBI hit in the second to score Huber again, with Hobert and Dix again keeping the runs coming. Melanie Czepinksa came through with her first hit of the season on an RBI single to score Dix in a huge second inning for the Dragons.

One again the top of the lineup started up a rally in the third inning, with Goodwin driving in Thompson and Dix knocking in Tolle to make it a 13-0 Howard lead. The Raptors picked up a consolation run in the fourth, but the run-rule came into effect as the Dragons took the game in five innings.

Hobert got a second straight complete game win, giving up five hits with five strikeouts and needing just 65 pitches in game two.

Thompson finished the day 4-6 with four runs and three RBI hitting effectively from the three spot in the lineup, while Huber and Burdette each accumulated four hits on the day each as well.

The Dragons will travel to another regional rival on Saturday, September 9 to take on Potomac State at 1:00 PM.
