Elicott City, MD - The Dragons were unable to capitalize on their opportunity to rise up in the regional rankings as the Anne Arundel Riverhawks swept Howard 7-2 and 21-2.
Things looked promising for the Dragons early in game one as
Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard) kept a no-hitter going through the first four innings of the game. Howard took the lead in the bottom of the third when
Danielle Thompson (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) drove in
Sarah Phelps (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial).
Anne Arundel scored in the top of the fourth off a sacrifice fly, then added two more in the fifth on a two RBI double to the gap that gave them a 3-2 lead. The Riverhawks added four more runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 7-1 lead.
Howard showed grit in the bottom of the seventh as Hobert,
Erika Goodwin (Laurel, MD/Hammond), and
Haley Adams (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) were able to load the bases with one out. Phelps drove in Hobert to pull a run back, but unfortunately the comeback attempt fell short after that.
Game two saw the Riverhawks bats score 10 runs in the top of the first and never let up, scoring 21 runs in five innings. Howard was able to score one run in the bottom of the first with
Grace Tolle (Woodstock, MD/Marriotts Ridge) driving in
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg), who later got an RBI single in the fifth to score Phelps.
The Dragons will now prepare for the playoffs where they will have a rematch against the Riverhawks at Anne Arundel on Saturday, May 7. The Region 20 quarterfinal matchup will be a best two of three series with two games played on Saturday and the third game played on Sunday if necessary.
