Columbia, MD - The Howard CC women's soccer team showed continued signs of improvement, defeating the Anne Arundel Riverhawks 3-0 for their second straight win.
The Dragons got out to a great start when a
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) cross was helped along by
Madison Dzubak (Highland, MD/River Hill) to the path of
Melissa Villatoro (Riverdale, MD/Parkdale) who fired home from close range to score her second goal of the season in the 16th minute.
Anne Arundel nearly tied the game in the 31st minute when a corner kick was placed into the middle of the Howard box, but a triple save by goalkeeper
Giselle Castillo (Falls Church, VA/Justice) kept the ball out. Unfortunately for her, the play resulted in an injury that forced her out of the game, only to see
Olivia Jackson (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) to come in for the second half to make five saves and preserve the shutout.
Howard doubled the lead early in the second half when a strong run forward by Sophie Pulone saw her hit a perfect through ball to
Molly Nichols (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) as she powered a shot home for her first goal of the season.Â
Jaylene Sotelo (/) put the icing on the cake in the 83rd minute when a
Mireida Castillo (Falls Church, VA/Falls Church) cross found Sotelo at the top of the box as her long range shot was hammered into the top of the net for a highlight reel goal.
The Dragons will next host the 9-0 Mercer County Vikings on Saturday, October 1 at 12 PM.
