Dragons Take Down Generals 68-56

Rockville, MD – The Dragons made it three in a row as they were able to take down a strong Sullivan County Generals team by the score of 68-56.

The game seemed evenly matched from the tip-off as the two squads exchanged baskets back and forth for much of the first half. After Sullivan built up a small lead, three pointers by Nhaikyia Smith (Waldorf, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and Sarah Deese (Woodbine, MD/Century) surged the Dragons ahead. Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/Charles H. Flowers) closed out the first quarter with an old fashioned hoop and harm to give Howard the 16-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

The Dragons opened up the lead to nine points as the scoring was spread out with a Rashelle Buynum (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) jumper getting Howard up to a nine point lead. The Generals were able to hold the Dragons down for the rest of the quarter, but Howard took a 32-27 lead into halftime.

Sullivan County was able to sprint out of the gates in the third quarter to tie the game at 37-37, but a big 11-2 run by Howard with Julia Harrington (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) asserting her will in the paint as the Dragon forwards had a major impact in the game on both sides of the court.

Howard continued to get the ball inside through the fourth quarter as a Mikiyah Mallett (Pasadena, MD/Old Mill) put back increased the Dragons lead to a game high 17 and cruised the rest of the way to victory.

Mallett and Harmon both finished with double-doubles as Mallett scored 15 points with 11 rebounds and six assists while Harmon scored 12 points with 13 rebounds. Julia Harrington (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) scored 16 points to lead all Dragons and Smith scored 13. Deese chipped in eight points to go along with five assists.

The Dragons will next travel to Philadelphia where they take on Harcum College on Saturday, January 14 at 12 PM. The two teams faced off back on December 17 in a game that Harcum prevailed 70-52.
