Howard Overcomes Slow Start, Beats Owls 65-56

Largo, MD - A rough start for the Dragons was overshadowed by a huge comeback as Howard was able to defeat the Prince George's Owls 65-56 on the road.

The Dragons fell behind 13-1 early, not making their first shot from the field until six minutes into the contest. Still trailing 20-12 after the first quarter, stormed back in the second quarter as a Mikiyah Mallett (Pasadena, MD/Old Mill) layup with two minutes left gave Howard their first lead of the game at 26-25. Kalani Corkeron (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) hit her third three pointer of the half right at the buzzer as the Dragons took a 31-28 halftime lead with the Dragon defense holding Prince George's to just eight points in the second quarter.

Howard picked up the pace even more in the third quarter, scoring 24 points in 10 minutes of play as Nhaikyia Smith (Waldorf, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/Charles H. Flowers) pushed the ball into the paint to get effective offensive possessions. The Dragon's shooting cooled off in the fourth quarter, but were able to make enough free throws to hold off the Owls and secure their fifth win in the last six games.

Smith had another fantastic performance with 19 points, six assists, six rebounds, and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. Corkeron scored 15 as did Mallett while Harmon finished with 10. Julia Harrington (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) added six points and 11 rebounds to the cause in a game where all 65 points came from the starting five.

The Dragons will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Anne Arundel on Saturday, January 28 at 1 PM.
