ELLICOTT CITY, MD - The Dragons put up their best fight in the program's short history against the vaunted Harford Fighting Owls, but ultimately fell 11-3 and 10-3 in the doubleheader.
Game one started out fantastically for the Dragons as the Dragons hit four singles in the bottom of the first, culminating with
Holly Ryan (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) driving in
Taylor Pence (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) to take the 1-0 lead.
Kat Wisor (Crofton, MD/Arundel) enjoyed holding that narrow lead on the mound, retiring nine straight Fighting Owls and taking a no hitter into the fourth inning. Harford took the lead in the top of the fourth as a couple of Howard errors led to two runs for Harford.Â
Wisor's dominance over Harford finally subsided in the fifth inning as the Fighting Owls scraped together five more runs, adding four more in the top of the sixth. Wisor was able to help her own cause with the bat, hitting a two-out RBI single to right center as
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) scored. The Dragons added one more run in the sixth inning, but it was not enough to stave off the mercy rule.
The Fighting Owls wasted no time getting out in front of game two, as they scored runs in the first four innings to get out in front 6-0. Kelly was able to stop Harford the next two innings as she gave the Dragons a chance to comeback, and the Howard bats answered the call. Ryan continued to swing a hot bat to get things going followed by a
Kaylin Galindo (Columbia, MD/River Hill) walk. with the bases loaded, Kelly smacked a two RBI double to the left center gap to get on the scoreboard. Wisor hit an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to score Pence from first as the Dragons made it a 6-3 game, but four more runs by Harford in the top of the seventh proved too much for Howard to overcome.
The Dragons will have little time to rest as they head to western Pennsylvania to take on Westmoreland County on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 PM. The Wolfpack are currently 1-11 on the season with their lone win coming against Cecil College.
