YOUNGWOOD, PA - The Howard Dragons softball team came through with a convincing doubleheader sweep over the Westmoreland Wolfpack, shutting down their regional opponents in both games by the scores of 11-0 and 13-1. The Dragons improved to 5-19 overall, but moved up to sixth in the regional standings at 5-7.
Kat Wisor (Crofton, MD/Arundel) took the bump for the series opener and threw an absolute gem, giving up two hits over the complete game seven innings with 11 strikeouts and zero walks. The Howard bats gave Wisor early support with four runs in the first inning taking advantage of several defensive miscues from the home team. Howard added one run in the third inning and another in the sixth to make it a 6-0 lead.
The seventh inning saw the Dragons pile on as the hits continued to stack up highlighted by a
Holly Ryan (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) home run as Howard scored five runs to tack on additional insurance runs.
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir), Wisor, and Ryan all had multi-hit games with
Taylor Pence (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) driving in four runs and scoring three herself. Ryan had three RBI in the game while Kelly scored a trio of times from the lead-off spot.
Morgan Ryan (Laurel, MD/Atholton) took the hill in game two and racked up eight strikeouts over five innings, allowing just one hit and one run in the game.Â
The Dragons once again hit early and often, putting up five runs in the top of the first with RBI hits from Pence, M. Ryan, and Kaylen Galindo. Howard scored three more in the second inning with an RBI hit by H. Ryan and a two RBI double from Gianna Sablan. The Dragons kept it going with four more runs in the top of the third with H. Ryan getting an RBI bunt single and two more runs scoring on a wild play on the base paths.
The Wolfpack scored one run in the bottom of the third, but the Dragons were able to have the mercy rule in effect for a five inning victory.
Kelly added three more hits in game two with three more runs scored. H. Ryan had a couple hits while joining Pence, Sablan, and Galindo with multi-RBI games.
The Dragons will keep adding up their travel miles next as they travel to Southern Maryland on Saturday, March 13 at 12 PM. The Hawks are currently second in Region 20 with an 8-2 record and are 15-2 overall.
