LA PLATA, MD - The Dragons were able to pull off a big split against a tough College of Southern Maryland Hawks team, losing game one 9-0 but winning game two 7-4. The Dragons move to 6-20 on the year and are seventh in the region at 6-8 while Southern Maryland goes to 16-3.
The Dragons managed just four singles in game one as the Hawks' ace was able to shut Howard down, combined with four home runs of run support to end game one early.Â
Game two was a much different story as the Dragons took advantage of several Hawk miscues to put up four runs in the first inning. The Hawks answered with a couple of runs in the bottom of the first, but Howard took one right back in the third as
Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton) doubled to lead off the inning and would later steal home to make it a 5-2 Howard lead. The Dragons added two more runs in the sixth inning as lead off singles by
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) and
Madeline Lackey (Manchester, MD/Manchester Valley) saw both come in to score and increase the Howard lead. That was enough of a buffer for Kelly on the mound, who pitched a complete game as she allowed just four runs and seven hits in seven innings.Â
Lackey and
Giana Sablan (Guam/Our Lady of Guam) each had three hits in game two while Kelly and
Holly Ryan (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) had multi-hit games as well.Â
The Dragons are next slated to host Anne Arundel on Saturday, April 20 at 12 PM. The two teams played a doubleheader back on March 16 that saw a dramatic split in the closely contested games.
