Largo, MD - The Howard Community College Dragons turned another page in the history books on Thursday night, as their 2-0 win over the Prince George's Community College Owls marked their best conference record in modern history.
Thursday's contest was a gritty game for the Dragons, as they were out-shot for the second straight game. Despite this, and several key players being unavailable, the Dragons toughed out the 2-0 win to move to 12-1 on the season.
Keeper
Jonathan Sanchez (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) kept the Owls scoreless with his tenth shutout win of the season. Sanchez made three crucial saves to ensure the shutout, and the Dragons saw excellent defensive play from
Alan Gutierrez (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) who was returning from injury.
On offense,
Nicholas Mirecki (Glenelg, MD/Glenelg) picked the perfect time to score his first career goal as he took a corner kick from
Jackson Costell (Ellicott City, MD/Glenelg) into the net for a 1-0 lead. Howard scored late to clinch the win off a
Predrag Ilic (Nis, Serbia/Gymnasium Stevan Sremac) penalty kick to make it a 2-0 game.
Howard continues to be ranked in the national Division II polls, and will face another tough test next week as they take on Division I contender Harford Community College on the road. Tipoff is at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, October 14.
