Rockville, MD - Less than 24 hours after a tough loss in the opener, the Howard Community College Dragons returned to the court with renewed purpose and delivered a heart-stopping 59–58 victory over Delaware Tech in their second game of the Montgomery Tip-Off Classic.
From the opening tip, it was clear the Dragons were determined to rewrite the script. Sophomore forward Savannah Price (Woodbridge, VA/Freedom), still fired up from her 14-point performance the day before, came out attacking, scoring Howard's first two baskets from three point range and setting an energetic tone. Delaware Tech countered, and kept the game competitive. Delaware Tech held a narrow 24–22 halftime lead at the buzzer.
The third quarter turned into a defensive chess match. Howard's Jolie Hamilton (Baltimore, MD/Forest Park) battled relentlessly in the paint, grabbing 13 rebounds in traffic and Hannah Chambers (Columbia, MD/Hammond) eliminated a lot of Delaware's opportunities. Chambers finished the game with 11 rebounds and a game high four steals, playing the lanes and disrupting the opposing teams' offense. Defense was the name of the game for the Dragons as Savannah Price (Woodbridge, VA/Freedom) and London Galbraith (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) recorded 3 steals a piece.
Howard shot a lot better from the field in this second match, improving to 31% from the field. A huge reason for this was the Dragon's leading scorer London Galbraith (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy), who recorded her season high 23 points. London was aggressive going to the basket and facilitated the ball well through the match, finishing with a game high five assists.
With under two minutes remaining and the Dragons trailing 58–56, Chambers drove hard to the rim, converting and drawing a foul. She sunk the free throw to seal the game with icy composure. Howard's defense then delivered on the final possession, forcing a hard three for Sabrina Washington to go wide. When the buzzer sounded, the team erupted in celebration, earning a hard-fought 59–58 victory and their first win of the weekend!
The Dragons improve to 4-3 and will take on Anne Arundel Community College in an away affair on November 19th at 5:00 PM!
